COPPERSMITHING COURSES

We offer a project–based coppersmithing course. Individuals will begin by working a two–dimensional sheet of copper to form a three–dimensional form such as a vessel, a box, a lamp, a sculpture, a small fountain or jewellery. This course also allows for students to incorporate their own ideas for the design and construction of projects. Over the duration of the six three hour sessions the student will be introduced to the basic coppersmithing processes of hollowing and raising, repousee and chasing, joinery (soldering, riveting), annealing, cleaning and polishing, pattern layout, tool making and the proper use of hand tools. Small class size allows for ample opportunity for individual instruction. No previous experience is necessary. Cost includes all tools and shop materials.

BLACKSMITHING COURSES

This course introduces the student to blacksmithing fundamentals: discussion about historic ironwork, a bit of metallurgy and practise of the basic forging processes: drawing out and upsetting, twisting, punching, splitting and drifting, chiseling, forge welding, collaring and riveting. Students will produce a small project which encorporates these various processes: a grill, a trivet, a candleabra, drawer pulls or cabinet handles or some such item. The use of hand tools is emphasized. Class size is limited to four participants. No previous metalsmithing experience is required; classes will accommodate varying levels of experience.
