This month I worked with Erin Ludlow's class of grade 11 students from Cameron Heights High School. Together we designed and built a Memorial to Upstanders during the Holocaust. The students came up with the idea of helping hands: of a shielded hand - the gauntlet - reaching out to grab hold of the human hand. Each of the laurel leaves encircling the hands has the name of an upstander and a symbol that represents how he or she helped to save lives. The finished piece will be permanently installed in the school library.
What a great group of individuals to work with - I just love what they did. This is one of the ArtSmarts Waterloo projects of 2017 - an organisation that pairs up artists with teachers to deliver part of the curriculum through art.
