The sculpture comprises of 25 forged steel bars with the ends flared and hot chiseled to represent ribbons that support individually cast bronze medallions. In conjunction with Veterans Affairs Canada, Two Smiths held an event September 28/ 29th, 2018 at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in Fredericton, NB. School groups, the general public and Canadian Veterans were all invited to participate in this collaborative piece. It’s really just such a short physical space in that whole delivery system - a system that because it’s underground, is mostly invisible to us. Waterloo Service Centre manages the city infrastructure of roads and sewers. The Museum wanted to display the skull in a Beauchêne style so that all the bones were mounted in anatomical position but with spaces between the bones that would enable them to be viewed from all sides. The undulating lines all emerge from a central stem and where they overlap they create interesting negative space. The event brought together 180 blacksmiths from 30 different countries for a period of a week. The base of the cenotaph was surrounded by a circle of 2016 poppies that were forged by children and blacksmiths around the world. It's the trenches and barbed wire and sandbags and it's those who died emerging from the ground in plant form - seeds for a future hope. Metal casting in sand is a technique still current in industry throughout the world. During this course you will learn how to make molds, as well as methods of preparing the cavity for the molten metal. You will create small scale, pure bronze objects, such as brooches, pendants, belt buckles, small plaques, figurines or other small objects. You will also work with polymer clay to make basic foundry patterns that will be cast in bronze. There are endless challenges in sand casting; instruction will allow you to experiment, on a small scale, with the possibilities of the medium. The basics of metal finishing will also be covered. In the centre are two hands; one is bare and the other is a protective helping hand, which is represented by the gauntlet. This gesture is encircled by a wreath of laurel leaves. Each leaf in the wreath contains a symbol and name of an WW2 upstander that was researched by the students. He walked into my shop, spat on the floor, sat dawn on one of the anvils and lit up a cigarette. At that point he still owned Alloy Castings in New Hamburg. He said he was going to sell his business and become a sculptor and the first sculpture he was going to build was Don Quixote. We ended up doing a number of projects for Ron at Hacienda Sarria. The tree has a series of compartments that are accessible via doors and drawers. A giant sewing needle stitches through ripples of fabric. Water driven textile mills situated along the Grand River were a significant part of the industrial manufacturing history of Waterloo Region. The thread that is being pulled through the fabric breaks up into separate strands, each of which originates in a landscaped bed that’s been constructed in the shape of Waterloo Region. The steel base is textured by forging to give it the appearance of mud. Three hand forged poppies, symbols of remembrance, rise out of the mud. At the base of the poppies lie three bronze discs that represent the dog tags worn by Canadian soldiers in WW1. On each tag a short inscription has been engraved. Unlike mass-produced mugs that are copper plated or painted, this mug will be made of solid copper, with actual hammer marks in the surface, made by you. Students will get to experience both coppersmithing and blacksmithing, leaving with their own unique mug that is entirely made by hand. During this 2 day course, copper will be shaped to form the vessel, and the handle will be made by forging steel, using a coke-fueled fire and hammers. Students will be introduced to both metals, and the joinery techniques of both riveting and soldering to connect the two. This course is fitting for both complete beginners and those who have taken any of our Coppersmithing or Blacksmithing workshops. Class runs from 10am-5pm Saturday and Sunday with a 1h lunch. Course Description: During this 2 day course students will forge their very own sloyd knife from start to finish. The blade will be made out of high carbon steel and have a hidden tang. A sloyd is a Swedish designed knife used for whittling and woodcarving. It is the main knife preferred by spoon carvers to do the majority of their shaping. Its small, thin profile and razor sharp edge allow it to cut through wood with ease. You will begin with a small billet of high carbon steel that you will heat up in the fire of a coke-powered forge. Using hammers and specialized blacksmith’s tools, the blade profile will be shaped and the tang will be forged out. During this course, you will learn: Forging basics: how to manage the fire and the uses of various tools Careful forging – how hot is too hot and when do I stop hammering? Blade geometry Heat treating How to fit the tang into the handle Handle ergonomics and how to shape it Proper sharpening techniques Class runs for 2 days, from 9am-5pm, with a 1h lunch. Students will learn the detailed process of making a proper high-end handmade knife. This course will teach you every step for forging a hidden tang chef’s knife; from creating the blade from a raw piece of high carbon steel, to the final finishing of the wooden handle. A hidden tang knife is one where you cannot see how the blade is fixed to the handle, as the back part of knife is completely hidden. You will use a traditional coke forge to heat the steel, and hand hammering techniques to create the blade profile. After sanding and filing it to a refined shape, you will learn how to heat treat it by hardening and tempering it in the fire. You will then learn how to properly sharpen the blade’s edge. To finish off the knife, you will make a wooden handle from scratch, filing and sanding it to a beautiful finish, and then sealing it with oil. Class runs 3 days, from 9am-5pm each day, with a 1h lunch. All materials, safety equipment, coffee and tea will be provided. Whether you have never made them before, have struggled with them, need a refresher, or simply need more of them (who doesn’t?), join us for a weekend of tong making! We will discuss tong anatomy, as well as stylistic and functional variations to help you figure out what you like best. We will start with the fundamental skills for creating flat bit tongs, which are the basic skills needed to create other styles. We will then create scroll tongs. You will learn: The steps for forging both flat bit and scroll tongs. How to produce different styles of “boss”. How to fit your tongs to your material for a good, secure hold. How to rivet the halves together. The pace to forge at and how to carefully check measurements. Different styles of reigns. How to adjust the reigns to fit your own hands for a comfortable and secure grip. We will be using coke-powered forges. Instructions on how to light and manage a coke fire will also be covered. Leave with more tools in your toolbox and the skills to keep going! Previous forging experience is required (For example, our Intro to Forging: Level 1 course). Class runs from 9am-5pm Saturday and Sunday with a 1h lunch. All materials, safety equipment, coffee and tea will be provided. often looking for time at the forge to play and work on their own ideas. Open Forge Days are an opportunity for you to do just that, and are only available to students who have previously taken a course with us. What is it? Our most affordable forging day! Open Forge is 1 day long, and takes place on the last Sunday of each month.. It is independent, self-directed time - an opportunity for you to make the things you want, to experiment, and to practice existing skills at your own pace. Sessions may include short demos that contain skills you can choose to try out during the day, such as shouldering, forge welding, punching, etc. As you know from working here before, at your forging station you are provided your own set of tools (tongs, hammers, fire rakes, etc.) and your own anvil – this will all be available to you during Open Forge. You are of course welcome to bring your own tools in addition. We do ask that all of your tools and projects are taken home in between Open Forge days to keep your stuff safe and the shop clear. Power tool access will include the band saw and belt sander, but specifically not angle grinders or the TIG welder, as the focus is on hand forging techniques rather than metal fabrication. We will teach you several fundamental forging techniques as we lead you step-by-step through the process of using a hammer to shape hot steel into natural leaf forms. You can then decide how to further transform that leaf into a small decorative or functional item. The finished objects will be treated with hot beeswax. No previous metalworking or drawing experience is necessary. All that’s required is a sense of curiosity and a willingness to learn! Class runs from 9am-5pm Saturday with a 1h lunch.
